From the people who brought you Civil War II.
Marvel Comics will be publishing a new comic book series for The Defenders featuring the same characters from the upcoming Netflix show, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
It comes from writer Brian Michael Bendis, artist David Marquez, and colorist Justin Ponsor, all fresh off working on Marvel’s big Civil War II event.
“You will get Jessica Jones looking out her window, street-level, and my return to Daredevil, which will be different than what I and Alex did before,” Bendis told The Hollywood Reporter, the outlet that broke the news today. “And Luke and Danny, characters that I have a strong affinity for. I spent most of the oughts being mocked for the love of Luke Cage. Now that Luke Cage is a household name, I just sit back in my chair and laugh and laugh.”
Bendis made a name for himself writing a critically-acclaimed run on Daredevil, he co-created Jessica Jones with Michael Gaydos, he brought Luke Cage into the limelight by making him a founding member of the 2010 New Avengers, and he’s the one who made Iron Fist an Avenger. He is a large reason most of these characters were established and popular enough to get a Netflix series in the first place.
The original Defenders comic featured Doctor Strange, Hulk, Silver Surfer and Namor taking on weird, larger-than-life threats, but the name has now been repurposed by Netflix for Marvel’s street-level heroes, and thus the comics are following suit. There have been many hints that this comic would be coming, going as far back as the New Avengers finale in 2012 and as recently as the final issue of Civil War II that just hit in December.
The Defenders will release in June, after receiving a preview in Marvel’s Free Comic Book Day offering in May.
