Options include a penguin, helicopter and even emoji. By Evan Campbell
The top hat and boot might get the boot in Monopoly. Starting today, Hasbro is letting fans decide the board game’s eight tokens.
Called the Monopoly Token Madness Vote, you can now pick among 50-plus choices what tokens are packaged in Monopoly. And that means the current eight could become history, though they are available to choose.
The new Monopoly selections include a penguin, rubber ducky, bunny slipper, bathtub and helicopter. There are even emoji options, like a smiley face or wink.
Monopoly debuted in 1935, and the car, thimble, boot, top hat and battleship have been there since the beginning. The Scottie dog and wheelbarrow were added in the early 1950s, while the cat came on board in 2013.
As such, this will be the first time the game could see such a dramatic shift with the play pieces.
The Monopoly voting contest will run through January 31, with Hasbro planning to reveal the winners March 19. The updated tokens will then show up in Monopoly beginning in August.
