Hands-On: The New Nintendo 2DS XL is the Coolest Handheld I Don’t Want

At the press event for the recently announced New Nintendo 2DS XL, Nintendo acknowledged the weirdness of releasing a device like this at a time like this. They tried to spin it as part of a long tradition of releasing weird devices, from the original Game Boy to the glasses-free 3D of the original 3DS. But if anything, the New 2DS XL feels like an attempt to minimize risk, not court it. Just as it was clear that the Nintendo DS was Nintendo’s true handheld successor, not a nebulous third pillar, the future of handheld Nintendo hardware is clearly the Nintendo Switch, which also doubles as a home console. However, the future takes time, and right now there are a lot of great 3DS games to play if you haven’t already. I may be ready to move on from dual-screen Nintendo devices, but if you can’t say goodbye yet, the New Nintendo 2DS XL is a very cool handheld. [embedded content] The New Nintendo 2DS XL takes the best aspects of previous 3DS models while discarding the rest. Unlike the original wedge-shaped 2DS, it has a clamshell design like a proper 3DS. However, it doesn’t have a 3D display, making…

The 3DS' Pikmin Sidescroller Seems Fine, Unclear Why It Isn't Also For Switch

At an event in a New York City hotel meeting room engineered by Nintendo to hype the July launch of the New 2DSXL, we played one of the new games also coming out that month: Hey! Pikmin. And we were left wondering, hey, why not also have these games run on Nintendo’s portable Switch? Advertisement Hey! Pikmin is a sidescrolling twist on the real-time strategy Pikmin series that launched on GameCube back in 2001, with two fun sequels on GameCube and then Wii U. In those games and this new one you control a spaceman named Olimar who can lead a troop of color-coded plant-people who he can throw at enemies or use to carry stuff. Olimar and his minions are tiny, and the visual joke of the games is that the giant things they deal with are usually small real-world things. Flowers appear to be as tall as trees. A garden trowel can serve as a bridge. We only played a couple of levels of the game, and they were early levels, so we’re able to tell you that it controls decently but can’t speak to the complexity or ingenuity of the game’s READ FULL STORY AT KOTAKU!

Hands-On With The New 2DS XL

The newly announced New 2DS XL looks sort of like an iPhone attached to a 3DS bottom, as you can see in the above video, which Kotaku boss Stephen Totilo and I shot at a Nintendo event in New York City this week. Advertisement If you’re in the market for one of these New 2DS XLs, the two important differences are: 1) it doesn’t have 3D, obviously; and 2) it’s a lot lighter than the New 3DS XL. I prefer the weight of my (sexy Majora’s Mask) New 3DS XL, but your mileage may vary. For a closer look, well, watch the video. READ FULL STORY AT KOTAKU!
