Soccer Team Signs FIFA Player, Cuts Him Two Days Later Over “Online Behaviour”

Two days ago, Dutch soccer club PSV proudly announced the signing of 22 year-old FIFA player Tony Kok to their esports team. Before the weekend was over, that contract had been torn up over sexist comments Kok has made on Twitter over the years. PSV—who were so proud of the initial announcement that they made this trailer for it—say in a statement on the club’s website that while they performed a background check before offering the deal, “Kok and his management failed to share information about his past”. Advertisement They’re referring to a number of deleted tweets (which fans have since recovered, and some of which are viewable on SoccerNews) in which Kok makes derogatory, sexist comments towards women. One particular tweet stands out though, where Kok—who it turns out is a fan of Ajax, a rival Dutch club—calls PSV fans “gay”. Advertisement Speaking with Dutch site Omroep Brabant, PSV’s general manager Toon Gerbrands said “The behavior that Kok has shown online is so far from the core values of PSV that a continuation of our cooperation is impossible. This was a hopeless and embarrassing READ FULL STORY AT KOTAKU!

The Best Sports Video Game

The latest sports games are not always the best. There’s an obsession with incremental changes and bullet-point features in the sports game scene, one which challenges fan’s ability to take a step back and assess each game as its own standalone title. It’s something I try and address in my own sports reviews on this site, and it’s something I’m taking to its logical conclusion here in this Quixotic attempt to pluck one game out of hundreds and call it the “best”. FIFA 17 vs PES 2017: Which Is Better? Welcome to the next generation, FIFA. What took you so long? Read more Sports games by their nature don’t turn up for each new season as entirely fresh products. The economics of the industry have determined that they re-use the same engine and models for years at a time, which means the difference between them can often be limited to current uniforms, a few new features and some adjustments to ball physics. And those changes are usually influenced as much by fan feedback as they are by the development teams working on them. Advertisement So it’s tough looking at say Madden 17 READ FULL STORY AT KOTAKU!

Several months ago, a Redditor discovered the mention of momentum and adaptive difficulty in FIFA 17’s files, suggesting that the game changes based on your performance. Speaking with Eurogamer, Creative Director Matt Prior discussed momentum: It’s something we often get asked. Is there something in there that scripts things? I can assure you there absolutely isn’t. It is just football. That kind of thing happens in football. Prior adds that “there is error in some of the algorithms for traps,” but “that’s all measured on an individual level. It doesn’t take into account, oh, this is 1-0 in the 90th minute, let’s give this guy more error. It’s very much individual. And as a result it can happen at any time.” The next FIFA title, FIFA 18, releases on READ FULL STORY AT…

The FIFA Goal That Just Wouldn't Go In

GIF Some days, it can seem like every force in the universe is against you. This FIFA player must have done something in a past life, as for thirty straight seconds, as he lands the most improbable non-goal possible in FIFA 17. MrMaskTV, a FIFA Twitch streamer, posted this clip earlier today, where a simple kick turns into a slo-mo symphony of failure. After a long walk down the white line, the ball is batted clear by the goaltender and sent back into play. Hopefully, the player went on to actually score some points. READ FULL STORY AT KOTAKU!

Report: Sony May Have Snagged FIFA 18 Marketing Deal From EA

Electronic Arts’ FIFA is one of its highest-selling franchises, particularly in the European region, so it’s no surprise that console manufacturers are interested in marketing deals for the games. Over the past few years, EA Sports and Microsoft have remained in a partnership over FIFA but if the photo above is anything to go by, it looks like Sony’s stepping up this year. The photo was posted by Polish YouTuber Oskar “Junajted” Siwiec (pictured) on Facebook, who attended a FIFA 18 event in Germany a couple of days ago. It was subsequently picked up by fans online and has since been making rounds but there’s no official confirmation of anything yet so we’re taking this one with a grain of salt. Some are suggesting that the photo may have been photoshopped while others say that FIFA games are often shown off on PlayStation consoles in Germany. However, photos from last year’s FIFA event display Xbox logos on the banner so we’re not sure if that’s an accurate claim. Either way, we’ll find out in due course. What do our readers think of this? [Source: Oskar “Junajted” Siwiec (Facebook) FIFA Forums via NeoGAF] READ FULL STORY AT PLAYSTATIONLIFESTYLE!

FIFA Ultimate Team Championship Decided On 90th-Minute Set Piece

GIF After two days of play in Berlin, the grand finals for the FIFA Ultimate Team Championship came down to the wire between Chevrey “Vitality_Rocky” Corentin and Shaun “xShellzz” Springette. Despite losing the lead on his home turf, a last-minute rally helped Corentin barely scrape by and secure his spot as the 2017 Ultimate Team champion. The two were each victors on their respective console, Corentin on Xbox One and Springette on PlayStation 4, but the format for FIFA Ultimate Team tournaments mandates an aggregate score over two games, one played on each. In the past, this has led to some players looking a little flustered when playing on an “away” console, but the two finalists seemed like they had done their homework prior to this event. On the PlayStation 4, it was a tense match between the two that culminated in a goal near the end of full-time, putting Corentin in the lead on his away console. With a 2-1 lead headed into his home turf, Corentin seemed set for an easy time of it. It soon became apparent, however, that Springette had also been doing some due diligence on the opposing console. The PlayStation READ FULL STORY AT…

Ten Years Ago, Dead Or Alive Launched The Careers Of The Highest-Paid Women Pro Gamers

Vanessa Arteaga had been playing fighting games since she was a child, long before she became one of the highest-paid women in competitive gaming history—but her tens of thousands in winnings still pale in comparison to the millions that her male peers have made in competitive gaming in the years since. Advertisement Her older brother started her off, because he needed someone to play fighting games with and she was nearby. In 2000, when she was 12 years old, he brought home Dead or Alive 2. She was skeptical. She hadn’t ever played a 3D fighting game before. Right away, she enjoyed everything about Dead or Alive 2: the characters, the style of play, the moves, the stages and what would become the game’s signature emphasis on counter-attacks. Advertisement She also noticed that, unlike other fighting games she had played the ‘90s, Dead or Alive 2 had a majority-women roster of fighters. As a young girl, she liked having the option to play as a woman: “I did gravitate towards the females – you look at them, even if they are video game characters, and think: ‘They’re so cool! I wanna be like them!’ Especially when I was young, I…

FIFA 17 Sold 2.5 Million Copies in the UK Last Year, Beating Star Wars: The Force Awakens

In the ERA’s report for entertainment sales (video, music, and games) in the UK for 2016, they say £6.3 billion was generated, which is a new record and is up 3% from 2015. Total physical entertainment sales dropped by 15% in 2016 as digital sales rose, though there were some bright spots on the retail side: handheld software was up 21.3% £48.8 million (likely thanks to Pokemon Sun/Moon) and vinyl records were up 56.4% to £65.6 million. Games revenue was up 2.9% to just under £3 billion, but physical game sales declined 16% to £776 million. Digital game sales, meanwhile, were up 12% to £2.2 billion. The biggest-selling entertainment release of the year was FIFA 17 with 2.5 million copies sold – almost the exact same number as FIFA 16 in 2015. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was #1 in video with 2.3 million copies sold, while Now That’s What I Call Music 95 was the #1 album with over 900,000 copies sold. Despite lagging behind Black Ops 3, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was the #2 best-selling game of 2016 in the UK. Likely in third place was Battlefield 1, which moved over one million copies. Entertainment Retailers Association CEO Kim Bayley said: The music, video and games industries were understandably nervous about the advent of new digital…

No Man’s Sky Disappears From UK’s September Digital Sales Chart

SuperData has revealed September’s digital sales chart for the UK, and Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky is nowhere to be found. The game, which came out in August, was marred by controversy and mediocre reviews following years of anticipation by fans. Unsurprisingly, FIFA 17 dominated the charts, generating £9.11m digitally in its first two days. The number two spot was taken by Activision’s Destiny with £4.78m, thanks in part Destiny: The Collection, which released on September 20. Last year’s FIFA 16 claimed the third position, generating £4.35m. Following is the list of UK’s top ten digital titles for the month of September 2016: FIFA 17 (EA) Destiny (Activision) FIFA 16 (EA) Call of Duty: Black Ops III (Activison) Grand Theft Auto V (Rockstar) Star Wars Battlefront (EA) Forza Horizon 3 (Microsoft) Overwatch (Activison) Tom Clancy’s The Division (Ubisoft) Rocket League (Psyonix) Digital revenue-wise, both Electronic Arts and Activision remain the top publishers.
