The Circle Review

Share. A sci-fi satire too jumbled and vague for its own good. By Alex Welch Over the past few years, James Ponsoldt has emerged as one of the most compelling independent filmmakers of his generation, following critically-acclaimed films like Smashed, The Spectacular Now, and The End of the Tour. He’s built up the kind of reliable reputation in the industry to make any new film of his one of the more anticipated independent films of the year, even when it has a much bigger budget than any of his previous outings, with a premise larger and more broad than any of the human conflicts he’s tackled before. All of that and more is why Ponsoldt’s newest film, The Circle, had started looking more and more like it could be one of the more interesting films of the year so far. Headlined by talented actors like Tom Hanks, Emma Watson, John Boyega, Patton Oswalt, and Karen Gillan, and based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Dave Eggers (who co-wrote the film’s script with Ponsoldt), The Circle had all the makings of being one of the best films of 2017. Unfortunately, the final product just doesn’t come close READ…

Opinion: Secret Empire Is Good for Captain America

Hail Hydra indeed. By Jesse Schedeen Secret Empire is turning out to be one of Marvel’s most controversial storylines in years. That’s to be expected when the core premise of a comic involves tarnishing the once sterling reputation of a 77-year-old icon. There are many fans who argue Secret Empire is a mistake – that Marvel is doing lasting damage to Steve Rogers for the sake of a short-term sales boost and a few newsworthy headlines. But that’s selling Secret Empire short. Controversial or not, this is a story that Captain America needs. You can’t blame readers for being upset with this new turn of events. Steve Rogers is rather unique among Marvel’s heroes in the sense that he is (or was) such an unimpeachable figure. He’s one of the few heroes whose commitment never wavers. He’s not really prone to self-doubt or moments of personal weakness. He’s just a guy from Brooklyn utterly devoted to doing the right thing and protecting the innocent from bullies. Suggesting that Steve Rogers is actually a double-agent for one of the most nefarious organizations in the Marvel Universe seems like an extraordinary betrayal of one of the most fundamentally decent characters in READ…

Colony Swarms to Halo Wars 2 on Xbox One and Windows 10 Today

The UNSC faces a formidable new foe in its battle against The Banished with the arrival of the Hunter pair known as Colony! Available today on Xbox Play Anywhere title Halo Wars 2 for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC, the first additional Banished leader features brand new units and abilities offering new strategies, tactics and gameplay across all multiplayer modes. Colony is available right now as part of the Halo Wars 2 season pass or individual purchase for $5.99. Strange and inscrutable, the Hunter pair who identifies as “Colony” is believed to be either a representative for Lekgolo allied to the Banished or a specialized command form of the alien eel-worms.  Colony defers only to Atriox and is charged with directing all Banished Lekgolo activities on the Ark, including creation and expansion of Lekgolo clusters for use in vehicles and other specialized applications. Though it cooperates with the Banished, Colony appears to have its own plans for the Ark. Most of its attention is currently focused on the activities near the resting place of the Forerunner keyships; missions undertaken outside the knowledge of other Banished leaders. When called upon to direct Banished military operations, Colony’s strategy is to control…

The Best VPN for Gaming

Our pick for the VPN with the least amount of lag By josh norem Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are an easy way to help hide your online activity from prying eyes, and though the technology has been around for a long time, it’s received renewed interest lately thanks to recent legislation. But which VPN is the best for gaming? Or has servers in the most countries? And are VPNs safe? IGN has completed deep dive VPN reviews of five of the most popular services to help you figure out which VPN is right for you. We wrote a beginner’s guide to VPNs and why you should use one here, so go read that first if you’re not up to speed. The short version? A VPN passes all your network traffic through its own encrypted connection no matter where you are, ensuring no one else, including your ISP, can see what you’re doing online. There’s a lot of nuance here – like whether the VPN itself is keeping a log of your activities – but that’s the gist of it. Though VPNs are great for security and privacy, at the end of the day they’re rerouting your web traffic through READ…

Rice’s Lestat is coming to TV. By Chris Morgan A television series based on Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles books has picked up steam, as the rights to the franchise have been optioned by Paramount Television and Anonymous Content. The rights to 11 of Rice’s popular vampire novels are part of the deal, which includes Christopher Rice, the son of Anne Rice, as writer and executive producer. Anne Rice, as well as Anonymous Content’s David Kanter and Steve Golin are also on board as fellow executive producers. The Vampire Lestat, by Anne Rice “In this unique golden age of television, I couldn’t ask for a finer or more passionate team to help bring my beloved vampire hero, Lestat, alive in a series of the highest quality.,” Anne Rice said in a statement accompanying the announcement. Rice regained the screen rights to the franchise last year, announcing her intent to create an ongoing TV series in the same vein as Game of Thrones. The Vampire Lestat is intended as the starting point for the show’s plot, according to Rice at the time, who also said she and her son are aiming to create “an open ended series.” IGN also spoke READ FULL STORY AT…

Bryan Singer Reveals Stan Lee Cameo in X-Men TV Show

Lee makes his latest appearance in the X-verse. By Chris Morgan Bryan Singer, who is directing the pilot for FOX’s potential series based on the X-Men franchise, has given us a glimpse at the production, namely by sharing a photo on Instagram of Stan Lee’s cameo. As you almost assuredly know, Lee likes to pop up in Marvel-based movies and TV series, so it’s not a shock that he is in FOX’s TV spinoff of X-Men, which is possibly called Gifted. Stan Lee filming his cameo in FOX’s X-Men TV pilot (photo via Bryan Singer’s Instagram) We don’t know many details on the series yet — though you can read up on the cast in the slideshow below — and even Singer’s Instagram of Lee doesn’t give away much. He’s carrying a bag, but what’s in the bag? The possibilities are endless! This isn’t the first time Singer has filmed a Lee cameo, as Lee previously appeared in Singer’s first X-Men movie in 2000 and in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse. On the X-Men side, Lee also cameoed in X-Men: The Last Stand and Deadpool, though Singer didn’t direct those two films. This new pilot marks the second READ FULL STORY AT…

Thor: Ragnarok's Hela Explained

Cate Blanchett’s Goddess of Death is gonna have Hela fun in the MCU sequel! By Arnold T. Blumberg Cate Blanchett is set to appear as the most alluring and menacing incarnation of Hela we’re ever likely to see when Thor: Ragnarok comes out on November 3, 2017. But who is Hela exactly? Well, we could easily go down the Asgardian rabbit hole on a subject like this, since Hela is one of many characters based at least initially on a figure from Norse mythology. But here we’ll only deal with the Hela of the Marvel Comics Universe, and that takes us first to… The Basics Hela is the Goddess of Death, ruler of the realms of Hel — where the dead that fall in the middle ground between honor and dishonor dwell — and Niflheim — where those that are dishonored must go. An Asgardian with an often-complicated approach to a simple goal — get as much power as you can as often as you can — Hela has constantly crossed paths with Thor, his family and friends, and many other heroes of the Marvel Universe. As a cosmic being of great power, she is a formidable threat beyond READ…

10 of the Best and Cheapest Fidget Spinners and Cubes

What idiot called them fidget spinners and not fidget widgets? By Seth G. Macy If you can’t seem to keep yourself still and need something, anything, to occupy your hands, the sudden explosion of fidget toys is just what you need. While they make somewhat dubious claims about their therapeutic benefits, there’s no denying the satisfaction of spinning a tiny toy, or clicking and fussing with switches and buttons, while you’re otherwise idle. It just feels right. Below we’ve compiled a list of the best fidget spinners and best fidget cubes you can buy right now. And if you aren’t interested in dropping $20 or more on a simple fidget toy, we’ve also included a few ultra-cheap fidget spinners and cheap fidget cubes that will still get the job done (and likely make a little but more noise while doing it). Jon Bernthal Loved That His Walking Dead Character Was Doomed

The Punisher actor looks back at Shane’s unavoidable fate. By Ed Douglas It’s been five years since actor Jon Bernthal walked away from the AMC show The Walking Dead, or rather since his character Shane Walsh met an untimely fate in the penultimate episode of Season 2. Since then, Bernthal has remained fairly active, appearing in last year’s The Accountant opposite Ben Affleck and on the 2013 TV series Mob City, and he had two movies at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival: the 13th Century religious epic Pilgrimage and the crime-drama Sweet Virginia. Now, however, Bernthal probably is more recognizable for playing Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, on Netflix’s Daredevil show. While Bernthal wouldn’t say a peep about what to expect from his upcoming solo series for The Punisher when we spoke to him at Tribeca, we did ask him to reflect back on The Walking Dead and whether he knew that his character wasn’t going to last very long on that hit show. In the original comics, Shane was killed in the second issue, but the television show did a lot more with Shane’s relationship with Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes. We asked how he found out that READ FULL…

Guest Column: Let’s Hear It for the Game Givers

Here’s to you, the game givers. In 1989, my grandma gave me my first Game Boy. Last week, my grandma died. By the time this goes up, I’m sure it’ll have been a couple weeks. Maybe a month or two? There’s a point where you look back at an event and suddenly remember it happened, even if the happening of that event affects you every day. She was a loving mother to my father. A loving surrogate mother to my mother, who lost hers at a pretty young age. She was brilliant at Scrabble and terrible at golf and loved playing both. She read true crime novels in a day. She had endless friends at her funeral. Her giving me a Game Boy for Christmas in 1989 (slowly accepting that her Jewish son’s kids were being raised Catholic) was nowhere near the top of her goodness. I doubt anyone else in the family still remembers it. She did far more and lived far more than that. Also gave me Golf because she, well, loved golf. But this is a video game site about video games with video game reviews, so I want READ FULL STORY AT GIANT BOMB!
