Pokémon Go Starts Giving Cheaters Marks Of Shame

Pokémon Go’s war against cheaters continues to intensify, with Niantic now giving out digital scarlet letters of sorts. On Reddit, a verified Niantic support account alerted players to a new feature coming to Pokémon Go: With the announcement of Raid Battles and the new battle features, we are staying true on our commitment to ensuring that Pokémon GO continues to be a fun and fair experience for all Trainers. Starting today, Pokémon caught using third-party services that circumvent normal gameplay will appear marked with a slash in the inventory and may not behave as expected. We are humbled by the excitement for all the new features we announced yesterday. This is one small part of our continued commitment to maintaining the integrity of our community and delivering an amazing Pokémon GO experience. We reached out to Niantic to ask further details, but did not hear back in time for publication. Right now, players are unsure which specific “third-party services” will trigger the cheater’s mark, though in the past folks have been known to use “mappers” that tell them where rare monsters will spawn, spoofing (using fake GPS locations so you can spawn anywhere), or bots (programs that find monsters for…

Fire Emblem Heroes' New Event Finally Makes The Game Challenging

Mobile tactics game Fire Emblem: Heroes offers pint-sized battles and dozens of (slightly horny) heroes to collect. One thing it doesn’t have is permadeath—until now. The game’s new Tempest Trials brings a variation of this feature and adds much-needed challenge to the game. The small battles in Fire Emblem: Heroes aren’t terribly difficult.. Even with an expanding catalog of story missions and a battle mode that lets you fight other players’ pre-assembled teams, the game never really offered much challenge. If you had tough heroes or paid attention to the game’s Rock, Paper, Scissors-esque approach to weapons, you could easily succeed. The Tempest Trials, however, are pretty damn tough. The core conceit for the Tempest Trials is the return of a major mechanic from the main series where characters who fall in battle are lost forever, at least within the sequence of battles you’re fighting in the Tempest. This means that if you lose a precious hero, you must press on without them. Don’t worry, they’re still alive and ready to be used in the other game modes. Since Fire Emblem: Heroes is also a gacha game that relies on random chance to get good heroes from summon, killing them…

You Got Your Mobile Puzzle Game in My Mobile RPG!

Although they may seem like polar opposites, puzzle games and role-playing games are both great genres to play on mobile phones and tablets. Puzzle games can provide short, satisfying brainteasers perfect for commutes. RPGs tend to be vast, sprawling adventures, but their relaxed pace and focus on constant incremental progression rewards frequent short sessions as well as marathon ones. But what if you don’t want to have to choose between a puzzle game and an RPG when picking your next mobile obsession? What if you want to play a game that’s both? You’re in luck! Puzzle RPGs are a mashup mobile gaming genre you can depend on, and here are some of our favorites. [embedded content] Puzzle Quest When it comes to puzzle/RPG mashups, Puzzle Quest is pretty much the king. As you play a Bejeweled-style match-three puzzle game, you’ll also strategically fight your way across a fantasy kingdom. This game was a revelation before smartphones were even a thing. As a mobile game, you have no excuse not to check it out. What You Need To Know About Games Vanishing From the iOS App Store

Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (iOS) Apple is ending support for 32-bit games with its upcoming iOS 11, launching this Fall. That means developers are rushing to update their games with 64-bit infrastructure and, sadly, several unlucky games will vanish from the iOS App Store. iOS 11 is currently in beta, but even now, some 32-bit games aren’t showing up in the App Store. You can still search for them on Touch Arcade, and as Gizmodo’s Rhett Jones points out, “If you use a direct link, the app is still available for download. What this means is you can still grab that old app that you meant to buy or would like to own again.” That method will only work for a little bit longer, though; in the coming months, iOS 11 will drop support for 32-bit games completely. Apple’s abandonment of the 32-bit infrastructure forces mobile app developers to choose between updating their older games or leaving them to die. It’s something that’s been a long-time coming, a known inevitability since earlier this year. Most developers interviewed for this story are opting to put in the work to save their apps. Fantasy Flight Games, which has released several READ FULL…

Fire Emblem

The Weirdness Of Fire Emblem Heroes' Bride Class

While Fire Emblem has had “Brides” for years now, their recent inclusion in a seasonal Heroes event makes the label “waifu simulator” feel less like a joke and more of a staple of the series’ identity. I’ve learned to love the sillier side of Fire Emblem Heroes and the franchise as a whole. A funny Spring event tossed popular characters into bunny costumes, placing the ladies into Playboy Bunny-esque costumes and arming the men with weaponized carrots. Before that, Fire Emblem Awakening introduced the mighty “Bride” class, which, despite the name, was just as powerful as other deadly classes. Awakening’s DLC also introduced a beach excursion with swimsuit clad heroes and heroines. Modern Fire Emblem games have not been shy about silly fanservice. Heroes’ Bride inclusion feels like a natural extension of a quirky sensibility that’s been growing in the franchise for some time now. But by combining blushing, gowned women with gacha mechanics, which encourage players to collect and claim all the special characters, Heroes strays into uncomfortable territory. Fire Emblem Heroes is a light hearted game about building an army of powerful characters from all across the franchise, men included, but this particular event only READ FULL STORY…
