Trophy Theory: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of Online Trophies

[embedded content]If there is one type of trophy that tends to elicit a strong reaction from the community, it’s online trophies. Of course, by reaction, I’m talking specifically about a strong unfettered hatred towards these accomplishments that can range from the mundane “play 10 games” to the ridiculous “reach the top of the leaderboards.” There is certainly an argument to be made in favor of online trophies hidden deep beneath that loathing many PlayStation gamers feel towards them, but there is a mountainous pile of reasons why online trophies will sometimes turn players entirely away from a game, as they feel they have no chance at proper completion. The rest of us who put up with them do so through gritted teeth, while making sure that our complaints are heard in every forum post and comment board that will listen (or not. Doesn’t really matter, we just feel the need to get these things out). What better platform to bitch a bit about every trophy hunter’s bane than Trophy Theory? In high school debate, I was taught that to properly argue your own side, you need to fully understand the opposition, so let’s take a step back and look at the…

Drawn to Death Is One of the April 2017 PlayStation Plus Free Games

[embedded content] When third-person online shooter Drawn to Death launches on April 4 in North America and Europe for PlayStation 4, it will be one of the April 2017 PlayStation Plus Free Games, Director David Jaffe has announced. If you don’t have a PS+ membership, it will cost $19.99 USD. On the PlayStation Blog, Jaffe revealed that he’d been having discussions with Sony behind the scenes about adding Drawn to Death to the Instant Game Collection, but couldn’t say anything until now: For the past few months, whenever players would suggest that Drawn To Death would be a perfect fit as one of the free games for PlayStation Plus, I’d have to bite my tongue (And if you know me, you know that ain’t easy!). All I could do was nod and say, “That’d be great. We’d love it, but no plans for that. Nice idea, though!” But behind the scenes we had been talking to the folks over at PS Plus. I wanted to find a way to invite all of you PS Plus members into this experience and give you a look at what really excites me about games these days. We’ve been working on Drawn To Death for nearly three READ…

GDC 17: GNOG Preview – Mindboggling Fun (PSVR )

What in the World Is a GNOG? I was fortunate enough to be invited to the PlayStation Booth on the floor at GDC 17 to check out GNOG  first hand with the PlayStation VR, and man, was it fun! I can already hear you asking, “what’s GNOG?” GNOG is the brainchild of illustrator and toy enthusiast Samuel Boucher. He originally had the idea of a 2D puzzle game, but when he teamed up with the Canadian collective KO_OP, it turned into a 3D puzzle game that works great in VR. GNOG is funded through the Sony PubFund Program and is supported by developer Double Fine Productions. The first thing I had to ask was how to pronounce the game title. It is a rather interesting name, but once I heard the answer, and understood the concept of the game, it totally made sense. The game is pronounced without the ‘G’ (i.e. Nog) and is set around a universe of monster heads with each head being called a Gnoggin (i.e. noggin). Each Gnoggin is in itself its own set of unique puzzles that are played out in a three-dimensional manner. The puzzles can be flipped and turned, and to solve READ…
