Sony Focusing on Increasing the Number of Younger PS Vita Users in Japan

The Western market for Sony’s PlayStation Vita has been the subject of much debate from time to time but Japanese developers have significantly supported the handheld and undoubtedly continue to do so. While some criticize Sony’s support (or lack thereof) for Vita in the West, the company still has faith in the Japanese market. In an interview with Trendy Nikkei last week (translation courtesy of Kotaku), SCE Japan Asia boss Atsushi Morita said that since Minecraft‘s release on the handheld in 2014, the company has been “actively” trying to bring more younger gamers on board. “Since Minecraft came out in October 2014, we’ve been able to actively bring on board kids; that is, younger gamers,” he said. “We’re going to continue concentrating on the PS Vita and increase the number of younger users. This year, we also plan on developing an IP that’s aimed at children.” Recently, NieR: Automata director Yoko Taro tweeted his desire to see a PS Vita successor, noting that a next-gen handheld can do what smartphones can’t. NieR: Automata Director Wants a PS Vita Successor

Over the weekend, NieR: Automata director Yoko Taro tweeted out his desire to see a PlayStation Vita successor (we want one as well). He told fans that he wants a “slightly smaller next-gen handheld console” that does what smartphones can’t do. You can check out his tweet below followed by a translation courtesy of Siliconera: VITA の後継機が欲しいなあ。Switch が出たから少し気持ちは落ち着いてるけど、もうちょっと小型の次世代携帯ゲーム機が触りたい。物理キーの無いスマートフォンでは満たされない欲望を満たしたい。 — yokotaro (@yokotaro) March 18, 2017 I want to see a Vita successor. That feeling has calmed down a bit after the release of Switch, but I want to play something on a slightly smaller next-gen handheld console. I want something that could satisfy my itch that can’t be done through a smartphone without physical buttons. While communicating with fans, he also spoke of having something like a keyboard to make chatting on the Vita easier as some felt that the touch screen can make it a bit inconvenient at times.
