PlayStation UK Boss: PS4 Was “Britain’s Best-Selling Console” in 2016

Despite a strong few months by Xbox One, and decreased unit sales year-on-year in the region, PlayStation UK boss Warwick Light has confirmed to Games Industry that “PS4 remains Britain’s best-selling console for another year.” Interviewed for the first time since becoming the head of PlayStation UK, Warwick added, “We comfortably won the Black Friday period, and the Christmas Peak and January. So we’re delighted with our sales. But it has been a fiercely competitive market.” He also heard from UK retailers that PS4 was “the most searched item for Black Friday across all categories.” When Games Industry suggested that PS4 sales had reached their peak (Sony’s latest financial report shows they’re still rising), Light said, “There’s always been, historically, a natural bell curve occurring. I guess there are three ways we are trying to address that. The first is PS4 Pro, the second is VR, and the third, I guess, is great games.” Discussing PS4 Pro, he said Sony is pleased with it so far: Pro was a gutsy move by SIE. It’s iterating on a console mid-lifecycle with a view to giving players a heightened, or enhanced, PlayStation 4 experience. It’s no secret that it is following a READ FULL…

Sony Financials: PS4 Shipped 9.7 Million Units in Q3, Game & Network Sales Rose

In Sony’s third quarter fiscal year 2016 report, they reveal that 9.7 million PlayStation 4s were shipped in the three months ending December 31, 2016, which is the most in a quarter since launch and 1.3 million more than they did in the same quarter last year. Lifetime PS4 shipments now sit at 57.1 million (sales to consumers were at 53.4 million as of January 1). Sony still expects to ship 20 million PS4s during the entire fiscal year (ending March 31, 2017) – bringing the lifetime total to 60 million – and they only need to ship 2.9 million units this quarter to reach that mark. In Q4 FY15, 2.3 million PS4s were shipped. Looking at the Game & Network division as a whole, sales were up 5.2% year-on-year to $5.3 billion (USD), which Sony says was “primarily due” due to an increase in PS4 software sales and “the contribution” of PlayStation VR. Sales were partially offset by the PS4 price drop and foreign exchange rates. Operation income was up 24.5% to $431 million, primarily due to PS4 hardware cost reductions and an increase in PS4 software sales. It was partially offset by the cheaper PS4 price. As a READ…

Sleek ‘Glacier White’ PS4 Slim Available Later This Month

Sony Unveils New “Glacier White” PS4 Slim In celebration of the winter season Sony has unveiled a new PS4 Slim, calling it the “Glacier White” edition. This is the first color variant for the PS4 Slim and it will be available later this month! This “Glacier White” version will be available as a 500GB model in Europe on January 24th for £259. This is just one day after a 1TB model is released in Japan on January 23rd. Japan will also have the 500GB model available as well. Some might recall this is the same color variant that came out for the original PS4 as well. Sony has not mentioned any other regions for release, so it is unknown when or if the variant will launch in North America. It is likely that it is only a matter of time before this is announced. The price for this “Glacier White” model is the exact same as the Jet Black version and both come with a dualshock controller of the same color. With this newest announcement, fans have been calling for the same color variant for the PS4 Pro, however it is unclear if this is something even in the works at…

Sony: PS4 Is the World’s Best Selling Console From 2014 Through 2016

In their latest trailer announcing the upcoming Glacier White PlayStation 4 Slim, PlayStation Europe revealed that PS4 is the world’s best selling console from 2014 through 2016, finishing at #1 in each of those years. The fine print adds, “Based on sales of all consoles from [January 1, 2014] to [December 31, 2016].” In Sony’s previous ads touting PS4 as “the world’s best selling console,” they didn’t say what time period was being measured. Since launch in November 2013, more than 53.4 million PS4 consoles have been sold, with 6.2 million of those happening between November 20, 2016 and January 1, 2017. Sony expects PS4 shipments to reach 60 million by the end of the fiscal year (March 31,2017). Back in December, an analyst suggested that lifetime Xbox One sales would fail to reach 30 million by the end of 2016, meaning PS4 could now be over 23 million units ahead. The Wii U, meanwhile, is no longer in production and finished with lifetime shipments of about 13.6 million. Do you think PS4 will be the #1 selling console in 2017 as well? Michael Pachter Claims PS4 Price Will Drop to $199 in 2017

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter has turned in his 2017 industry predictions ahead of the new year, claiming that Sony will reduce the asking price of the standard PS4 (i.e. the Slim model) to $199 by December 31, 2017. Word comes by way of, which has pulled together a handful of experts — SuperData’s Joost van Dreunen, EEDAR’s Patrick Walker, IHS Markit’s Piers Harding-Rolls, and Kantan Games’ Dr. Serkan Toto — to offer up a series of forecasts and estimations regarding Nintendo Switch, virtual reality, and much more. Among them is Pachter, who led with the prediction that Sony will slash the PS4 price some time next year. Per GamesIndustry: “PS4 price goes to $199. I think Sony is intent upon keeping Microsoft in distant second, and expect a price cut for standard PS4 (slim) to $199 before year-end 2017.” For the sake of perspective, the PS4 Slim currently retails at around $249.99, with many of those entry-level bundles also including a game in the vein of, say, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. As such, don’t be too surprised if Pachter is actually on point with this one. What do our readers make of Pachter’s forecast? Indeed do you think a PS4 price…

September 2016 NPD Report: PS4 Slim, New Sports Games Can’t Stop Decline

Even with the launch of the slimmer PlayStation 4 and the latest round of sports titles, September 2016 sales in the United States dropped 23% year-over-year to $838.2 million, the NPD reveals. By category, hardware was down 25% to $234.3 million, console software was down 22% to $453.4 million, PC software was down 3% to $19.8 million, and accessories were down 27% to $130.8 million. NPD analyst Sam Naji says, “The release of the PS4 Slim and the second month of the Xbox One S was not enough to stimulate total hardware spending.” The Xbox One was the best-selling platform in September, accounting for 37% of all hardware units sold. The 500GB PS4 Slim, meanwhile, was the third best-selling hardware SKU for the month. “Due to average retail price declines for consoles and a decrease in hardware units sold for the PS4 and the Wii U, total hardware dollar spending declined by 25 percent since September 2015,” Naji adds. The Nintendo 3DS saw an increase in sales year-over-year again though, which it’s done ever since Pokemon Go launched in July. Looking at software, Naji notes that this year’s new releases weren’t enough to match last year’s offerings. “This month’s new software releases —…
