Trophy Theory: Letting Go and Accepting Trophy Defeat

[embedded content] One of the hardest lessons that any PlayStation trophy hunter has to learn is when to let go. That point comes at a different time for everyone. Many people can look at a trophy list and not even care about these digital pats on the back. Others will drive themselves mad going for every trophy on a list no matter how much effort or time they need to put in to complete it. Of course the ultimate defeat comes when the trophies aren’t even possible to get anymore, often due to server shutdown, forcing the trophy hunter to accept the fact that certain trophies will never be earned, and certain lists will never be complete. Here at Trophy Theory, most of us are obsessed with trophies. It’s the whole reason I started this column. I wanted to share my obsession with everyone else and talk with like minded people that seek trophies just as much as I do. As obsessed as I am, I have had to accept that there are trophies that I will just never get. Letting those potential Platinums go was hard to do but there are many reasons to accept that a trophy may…

Sony Financials: PS4 Shipped 9.7 Million Units in Q3, Game & Network Sales Rose

In Sony’s third quarter fiscal year 2016 report, they reveal that 9.7 million PlayStation 4s were shipped in the three months ending December 31, 2016, which is the most in a quarter since launch and 1.3 million more than they did in the same quarter last year. Lifetime PS4 shipments now sit at 57.1 million (sales to consumers were at 53.4 million as of January 1). Sony still expects to ship 20 million PS4s during the entire fiscal year (ending March 31, 2017) – bringing the lifetime total to 60 million – and they only need to ship 2.9 million units this quarter to reach that mark. In Q4 FY15, 2.3 million PS4s were shipped. Looking at the Game & Network division as a whole, sales were up 5.2% year-on-year to $5.3 billion (USD), which Sony says was “primarily due” due to an increase in PS4 software sales and “the contribution” of PlayStation VR. Sales were partially offset by the PS4 price drop and foreign exchange rates. Operation income was up 24.5% to $431 million, primarily due to PS4 hardware cost reductions and an increase in PS4 software sales. It was partially offset by the cheaper PS4 price. As a READ…

Valkyria Revolution Trophy List Revealed, Features 28 Trophies

Sega’s action role-playing game Valkyria Revolution releases later this month in Japan (with a worldwide release coming later in 2017), and now the game’s trophy list has been revealed. As expected, the retail release has a Platinum trophy. This will give completionists something extra to try to achieve. Some other tidbits from this listing shows that the Vita and PlayStation 4 versions of the game share a trophy list, so there won’t be any double dipping. That means players can only earn one Platinum from the game. The list is relatively short, coming in at 28 trophies, although it’s larger than the trophy list for Valkyria Chronicles, which only had 21 trophies. You can check out the full details for each trophy in the gallery embedded above (POTENTIAL SPOILERS INCLUDED FOR EACH GAME), with a breakdown of the trophy amounts below: Valkyria Revolution (PS4 & Vita) 1 Platinum 6 Gold 11 Silver 10 Bronze If you’re counting, that means Valkyria Revolution will feature 28 different trophies to collect. The action role-playing game releases in Japan on January 19, 2017. It’s expected to release in North America and Europe in the second quarter of 2017, and will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Vita. It also…

Sony: PS4 Is the World’s Best Selling Console From 2014 Through 2016

In their latest trailer announcing the upcoming Glacier White PlayStation 4 Slim, PlayStation Europe revealed that PS4 is the world’s best selling console from 2014 through 2016, finishing at #1 in each of those years. The fine print adds, “Based on sales of all consoles from [January 1, 2014] to [December 31, 2016].” In Sony’s previous ads touting PS4 as “the world’s best selling console,” they didn’t say what time period was being measured. Since launch in November 2013, more than 53.4 million PS4 consoles have been sold, with 6.2 million of those happening between November 20, 2016 and January 1, 2017. Sony expects PS4 shipments to reach 60 million by the end of the fiscal year (March 31,2017). Back in December, an analyst suggested that lifetime Xbox One sales would fail to reach 30 million by the end of 2016, meaning PS4 could now be over 23 million units ahead. The Wii U, meanwhile, is no longer in production and finished with lifetime shipments of about 13.6 million. Do you think PS4 will be the #1 selling console in 2017 as well? Check Out Batman: Return to Arkham’s Trophy Lists

UK developer Rocksteady’s two most beloved Batman games are coming to PlayStation 4 next week (October 18), and now the Trophy Lists for both of the titles have been revealed. Players will once again be able to gain plenty of trophies in Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. Those expecting to see unique lists will be pretty disappointed, as they are identical to the PlayStation 3 versions. That means players will be performing the same tasks to get the same trophy icons, but hey, more trophies is more trophies at the end of the day. Since the lists are identical, it also means that each title includes a Platinum Trophy as expected, so Trophy hunters will have a nice goal to try to reach in each game. You can check out the full details for each Trophy in the gallery embedded above (POTENTIAL SPOILERS INCLUDED FOR EACH GAME), with a breakdown of the Trophy amounts below: Batman: Return to Arkham – Arkham Asylum (PS4) 1 Platinum 1 Gold 18 Silver 28 Bronze Batman: Return to Arkham – Arkham City (PS4) 1 Platinum 1 Gold 21 Silver 48 Bronze If you’re counting that means Batman: Return to Arkham – Arkham Asylum will feature 48 different Trophies…
